Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600: Ultra-luxury SUV

A first Maybach version of GLS-Class, GLS 600 4MATIC, was unveiled at 2019 Guangzhou International Motor Show on 21 November 2019. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4MATIC represents a new form of luxury in the SUV segment. It extends the portfolio of the Mercedes-Maybach brand by combining the body design and technical basis of the GLS with the luxury of a top-class saloon car. While the regular Benz-branded GLS-class SUV is a three-row affair, the Maybach GLS600 offers just two rows, both of which offer heat and massage functions. The rear seats are the place to be; with acres of legroom and two power-adjustable recliner seats, riding in the back is akin to traveling in the fanciest first-class airline cabins. A Burmester audio system will be available and features an incredible 27 speakers. The new Mercedes MBUX infotainment system is housed on two screens, which can be controlled via touch, controllers on the steering wheel, or a center console controller.

The GLS 600 receives the twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 engine that is omnipresent in the Mercedes range. It delivers 550 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque and it spins the four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive. Mercedes pegs its zero-to-60-mph time at 4.8 seconds and electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. The standard 48-volt mild hybrid system briefly gives the GLS 600 an additional 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It also sends the kinetic energy it recuperates to the battery pack while braking or coasting, and powers a technology named E-Active Body Control, which scans the road ahead and adjusts the suspension as needed if it detects a pothole, a bump or another obstacle. The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 will arrive in American showrooms by the end of 2020.
