Data Gate Installation, China

“Data Gate” is the World’s First AI Astronomical Research Data Sculpture Public Art in Nanjing, China. The installation, by Istanbul-based new media studio Ouchhh, consists of 3 parts; Form, Light and Space.

This artwork applies the concept of machine learning in the context of space discovery and astronomical research through data acquired by Nasa's Kepler space telescope, which has traveled in space for 9.6 years, confirmed 2,662 planets, documented 61 supernovae as well as observed 530,506 stars.

The cube-like installation, weighing 15 tons, transforms the Kepler data from NASA into signals and then converts these into animated visuals that are projected on its surface.
By using the Kepler data from NASA, the public will be able to observe the exoplanets [planets that orbit around other stars] which human life can exist in. By taking this concept one step further, Ouchhh aims for this artwork to be considered as a gate between our planet and other habitable planets around the universe.

The resulting work will invite visitors to plunge into the fascinating world of space discovery through immersive data sculpture. The installation will offer a poetic sensory experience and is meant to become a monument of mankind’s contemplative curiosity and profound need for exploration.

This 360 LED Sculpture has won the “2019 Muse Creative Awards” in Experimental & Immersive Category.
