2020 Ferrari 812 GTS: A V12 Spider

Ferrari unveiled the 812 GTS, its latest V-12 spider, in Maranello on September 2019. The car is based on the 812 Superfast, the open top version. This marks the first front-engine V12 series production convertible model offered by Ferrari in 50 years. The first V12 spider, the 166 MM, was a competition GT launched in 1948 that won the Mille Miglia and 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1949. The last in the lineage – until now – was the 365 GTS4. Ferrari claims it is the most powerful production spider in the world. The folding metal roof opens in 14 seconds at speeds of up to 28mph and does not affect interior dimensions, claims Ferrari. The electric rear screen – the wind-stop – can be also be left open with the top up, so occupants can enjoy the V12’s sound even more. The rear of the car has been redesigned, resulting in the rear wheel arch losing its aerodynamic duct. That disadvantage has been compensated for by the addition of a flap on the rear diffuser.

The 812 GTS shares its massively powerful 6.5-liter V12 engine with the 812 Superfast, and it makes 789 hp at 8500 rpm. Torque hits its 530 lb-ft peak at 7000 rpm, the V-12 engine has an 8900-rpm rev limit. The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission has been programmed for faster shifts, and now has shorter gear ratios to improve the 812's response to throttle inputs. Ferrari says the GTS will reach 62 mph in less than three seconds and 124 mph in 8.3 seconds. The car will have a top speed of 211 mph. Expect to pay around $370,000 for a new Ferrari 812 GTS in bone stock form, but we've seen that price climb to well over $450,000 when fitted with optional extras such as the passenger infotainment system, extensive carbon-fiber coverage, racing bucket seats, exclusive exterior paint jobs, and uprated wheels.
